What is Botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin type A, also known as Botox® is widely used as an anti-wrinkle treatment and is ideal for smoothing out dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles that are formed due to repeated movements over time).
Botulinum toxin type A is a purified protein produced under laboratory conditions from bacteria and is classed as a neurotoxic substance. Uses cover many medical disorders and conditions such as excessive sweating and migraines. Its less well-known uses include treating disorders with overactive muscles, and also bladder conditions. Its use in aesthetics involves the temporary paralysis of facial muscles in order to create a smooth appearance of the skin. Botulinum toxin was first tested in the 1970’s and then approved for medical use in the 1980’s when its first use was to treat crossed eyes.

Yes, botulinum toxin is a temporary treatment. In general, it will usually last for around 3-4 months. Some patients have reported this to be longer.
A typical patient will start to experience the effects within 5 days. Some patients will notice the full effects up to 10 days following the treatment.

This depends on the condition you wish to treat. It may be the case that during consultation we decide that alternatives, such as dermal fillers or skin boosters will provide a better result for you. We will always suggest what we think is the best treatment for you.
Botox is generally regarded as a safe procedure, with millions of treatments being carried out each year. As with most procedures there is a risk of side effects, although most of these can be traced back to poor technique, or poor clinic procedures. The large majority of side effects from Botox are minor, temporary issues such as swelling or bruising at the site of injection. These are lessened when all the proper precautions are carried out and the injector is a fully trained professional. Studies have shown that serious side effects are extremely rare.
